Jetzt oder nie – so entsteht Musik. Wir haben es uns ein paar Tage im Studio gemütlich gemacht und drauflos gespielt. Nicht was Sie denken, da macht nicht jeder was er will, sondern was die Musik will. Vorherige Absprachen gab es kaum, einer sagt vielleicht … du fängst an. Dann hört er und schon weiß er, was er tun muss … bestenfalls. Wir agieren wie zwei Komponisten, nur in so einer Art von Jetzt, das nicht mehr radierbar ist. Da entstehen Stücke mit ganz unterschiedlichem Charakter und die Herausforderung des Musikers besteht darin, es dem Stück im Moment recht zu machen. Die Vorbereitungszeit für diese Aufnahmen war lang. Sie begann 1988, als ich ein Solokonzert von Michael Heupel hörte und von seiner Musik so begeistert war, dass ich ihn fragte, ob wir uns musikalisch zusammentun wollen. Er hat ja gesagt, und so konnte unsere Verbindung 30 Jahre lang reifen. Wir spielten über die Jahre viele Konzerte und nahmen CDs auf.
Diese lange Zeit ist nun eingegangen in unsere heutige Musik und das Konzept, die Kompositionen (denn so klingen sie für mich und dem Zuhörer kann es ja egal sein, wie und wann komponiert wurde) im Moment entstehen zu lassen, eröffnet natürlich den meisten Raum für musikalischen Austausch, nämlich einen unendlichen. Das bringt aber auch unendliche Probleme, die nicht alle auf einmal gelöst werden können. Aber schon die kleinste Anregung, die kleinste Absprache … Rhythmus, Tonart, Tonleiter … du fängst an … kann einen in Bewegung setzen und hat man einen guten Anfang gefunden, kann der Musik einfach folgen, ist alles leicht und das Stück entsteht … ja, wie von selbst. Hinterher weiß man gar nicht mehr, wie das eigentlich alles möglich war. Spielt auch keine Rolle mehr. Man hört’s ja. Uwe Kropinski

Now or never – that’s how music happens. We made ourselves comfortable in a studio for a couple of days and just played. Not what you think – we didn’t just play whatever we wanted, but what the music wanted. We made almost no previous arrangements. One of us would say „…you start“, then he just listens and immediately knows what to play – at best. We act just like two composers, only in a kind of here and now that is not erasable. Every piece has a personality of its own, challenging the musicians to follow immediately wherever it wants to go. The preparation time for these recordings was very long. It began in 1988 when I heard Michael Heupel playing a solo concert and liked it so much that I asked him whether he would like to collaborate with me. He said yes, and so our connection could mature over the next 30 years. Over the years, we played many concerts and recorded CDs together.
This long period of time together flows into the music we play today. Our concept of playing instant compositions (because that is what they are to me; and for the listener it is irrelevant how and when they were composed) opens up enormous – even infinite – possibilities of musical exchange. Of course, this process also brings infinite problems that can’t be solved all at once. But even the tiniest stimulus, the tiniest agreement – rhythm, key, scale, „…you start“ – can set you in motion, and once you’ve found a good beginning, you can follow the music, everything becomes easy and the music will be made… yes, by itself.
