Zwar stammen die Aufnahmen schon aus dem Jahr 1999, doch ist die von Brötzmann, Hamid Drake, Toshinori Kondo und William Parker vorgenommene Verblendung von Rituellem und Futuristischem, Maßlosem und Konzentriertem immer noch hochaktuell. The last of the DIE LIKE A DOG recordings, AOYAMA CROWS finds our intrepid foursome in a spirited, upbeat mood. Recorded live in 1999, six years after their debut, the quartet continues here to find new angles and grooves to pursue. Parker and Drake are especially good throughout, flying alongside the powerful two horns, steering as much as supporting. Is this the greatest quartet of the 1990s? Listen and decide.
