Der auf dieser außergewöhnlichen Aufnahme zu hörende Auftritt wird wohl kaum das letzte Konzert des Trios Leimgruber-Demierre-Phillips gewesen sein. Er war jedoch ihr letztes Konzert für die nächste Zeit, da der Bassist Barre Phillips nach vielen Jahren in Frankreich zurück in die USA gezogen ist. Das Konzert war nicht als das letzte geplant, und so kann es ebenso sinnvoll sein, es als ihr erstes zu betrachten.
Obwohl es natürlich genauso wenig ihr erstes Konzert war. In den letzten 20 Jahren hat das Trio ein halbes Dutzend Alben veröffentlicht, wovon bei jedem die Frische einer ersten Begegnung mitschwingt. Ihr Zusammenspiel ist stets wie eine Entdeckung, als träfen sie sich zum ersten Mal. Das Trio scheint irgendwie stets in der Morgendämmerung zu existieren.
Das mag daran liegen, dass sie, zumindest klingt es für mich so, ganz unterschiedliche Musiker sind, sich jedoch ständig voneinander inspirieren lassen. Lauschen Sie der scheinbaren Leichtigkeit, mit der Leimgruber vom Vordergrund in den Hintergrund wechselt. Achten Sie auf die Muskulatur von Demierres zartem Spiel. Und nehmen Sie wahr, wie rasch Phillips reagiert und so das Spiel von Saxophon und Klavier unterstreicht, nicht durch klangliche Unterstützung, sondern indem er Zusammenhang stiftet. Als Trio sind die Musiker wahrlich, wenn nicht sogar ausgesprochen, großartig.
Bei ihrer auf dieser Aufnahme festgehaltenen Begegnung in Luzern im Dezember 2021 handelt es sich also weder um ihr letztes noch um ihr erstes Konzert, aber es war zweifellos das erste Mal, dass sie genau dieses Konzert spielten, und ungeachtet dessen, ob es nun ein erstes oder ein letztes Treffen war oder ob sogar beides zutrifft – es findet sich Weisheit in ihrer Unterhaltung. Keiner von ihnen prescht vor, um den Austausch zu dominieren. Sie bringen unterschiedliche Perspektiven ein – sie gehören ja auch unterschiedlichen Generationen und Nationen an (Phillips, der über achtzigjährige Amerikaner ist beinahe 20 Jahre älter als seine Schweizer Kollegen) –, doch ihr Engagement für das aktuelle Projekt verbindet sie, und diese Leistung ist größer als jedes Solo. FIRST AND LAST MEETINGS (BEING EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN)
The performance documented on this remarkable recording isn’t likely to be the last concert by the trio of Leimgruber-Demierre-Phillips. It was, however, the last one for the foreseeable future, with bassist Barre Phillips having moved back to the U.S. after many years living in France. The concert was not intended to be the last, though, and in any event it might be just as useful to think of it as their first.
It isn’t their first concert either, of course. The trio has released a half dozen albums over the last 20 years, each with the freshness of a first encounter. There’s always a sense of discovery in their playing, as if it were their first time meeting. The trio seems somehow to exist perpetually at dawn.
That may be because, at least to my ears, they’re such different players but they’re constantly taking cues from one another. Listen to the apparent ease with which Leimgruber shifts from foreground to background. Notice the musculature in Demierre’s delicate playing. And consider how quickly Phillips responds, underscoring the saxophone and piano not with tonal support but by adding context. As a trio, they’re assuredly, even boldly, sublime.
So the encounter in Lucerne in December, 2021, documented on this recording wasn’t a last concert and it wasn’t a first concert either but it was, at any rate, the first time they played this particular concert and regardless of being a first meeting or a last, or even if both are true, there’s wisdom in the conversation. None of the participants rush to dominate the discussion. They bring different perspectives—indeed they come from different generations and different lands (Phillips the octogenarian American has nearly 20 years on his Swiss counterparts)—but they share a commitment to the project at hand, an effort greater than any solo.
