„Es ist doch nur Musik“ sagt Trevor Watts manchmal. Diese Bemerkung mag überraschen bei einem, der als Saxophonist und Perkussionist die ganze Welt bereist und für den Musikmachen etwas Grundlegendes und Allgemeinmenschliches ist. Watts interessiert sich nicht für Musik als Weg zur gefeierten Medienprominenz; für ihn ist Musik vielmehr eine Möglichkeit, selbst die ganze Fülle kreativen Lebens zu zelebrieren. Auf DEEP BLUE, Watts‘ neuestem Soloalbum, hört man ihn allein, aber auf mehreren Tonspuren, so dass sich sein Instrument von einem Sprungbrett aus Perkussion und Keyboard in die Höhe zu schrauben und zu singen scheint. Im rhythmischen Überschwang ergießen sich dann die Themen aus Watts‘ Altsaxophon und fließen dabei so unaufhaltsam wie klares Quellwasser dahin. Diese Quelle zapft Watts schon seit vielen Jahren immer wieder an, denn er weiß um ihre belebende Frische. Ohne dieses Wissen gäbe es keine Improvisation. Die Stücke beweisen Können und Wissenwollen zugleich. Seine Erfahrungen in der Musik nähren Watts’ Spiel ebenso wie seine persönlichen Erinnerungen, wobei er jedoch keinen nachdenklichen oder innerlichen Gestus pflegt; die hochaktuelle Kunst des klugen Improvisators verspricht immer neue Freuden.

It s a remark made by a man who has travelled the world playing saxophone and percussion instruments and has recognized that making music is one of the fundamental things that people do, everywhere. He also knows that playing music answers a deep personal and collective need, that it can be the basis of an individual life and the heartbeat of a culture. Trevor has no interest in music as a route to celebrity, that hollow creation of the contemporary mass media, but he s totally committed to music-making as a form of celebration, the expression of a life lived creative and fully. On Deep Blue he is heard alone, but multi-tracked so the horn sings and soars from a springboard of percussion and electronic keyboards. Rhythmically irrepressible, its warmly welcoming theme spills from Trevor s alto sax with the flowing inevitability of clear water rising from a spring. He has tapped into that spring for many years, knowing that at its source the creative flow constantly renews and refreshes itself. That knowledge is a key to the improviser s art. It s a set of pieces textured with know-how and energised by curiosity. Experiences within music and personal recollection feed into Trevor s playing but the impetus is not to linger and reflect; other pleasures and possibly revelations are waiting in the canny improviser s edge-of-the-moment art.
