August 2008, Berlin-Kreuzberg. Unter der Leitung von Ulrich Gumpert spielt eine handverlesene Band die Titel für dieses Album ein. Einige der hierzulande besten Improvisatoren der heute Dreißig- bis Vierzigjährigen widmet sich den Stücken mit großer Konzentration, Elan und Leidenschaft. Gumpert gilt den Jüngeren als Institution. Das Verhältnis untereinander ist kollegial, auf das bestmögliche Resultat orientiert. Arbeitseifer, einer Workshop Band gemäß, Enthusiasmus. Die Sprache der Band lässt sich schwerlich auf einen Begriff oder auf einen gemeinsamen Nenner bringen. Ulrich Gumpert tanzt auf vielen Hochzeiten, erweist sich als Grübler und Eigenbrötler, zugleich als einer, der die Solisten seiner Band zu integrieren weiß und sie zur Hochform inspiriert. Der Schwung eines Mingus und die kochende Atmosphäre einer Cannonball Adderley Band, die Anarchie der frühen Free-Jazz-Orchester, die Nachdenklichkeit eines Satie oder die Konstruktivität eines Third-Stream-Composers – man könnte meinen, Gumpert habe von allen etwas. Aber nein, das wäre kein Stil. Wie alle Jazzmusiker von Rang spielt Gumpert mit seiner Biographie. Wohnhaft in Berlin Mitte, die Straße heißt „Am Zirkus“. Some of the best improvisers in this country of today thirty to forty years are dedicated to the pieces with great concentration, elan and passion. Gumpert is considered an institution to the younger. The relationship between each other is collegial, oriented to the best possible result. Work zeal, a workshop band according to enthusiasm. The language of the band can hardly be brought to a term or to a common denominator. Ulrich Gumpert dances at many weddings, proves to be a brooder and self-breeder at the same time as one who knows how to integrate the soloists of his band and inspires them to high form. The swing of a mingus and the boiling atmosphere of a Cannonball Adderley band, the anarchy of early free-jazz orchestras, the thoughtfulness of a satie or the constructivity of a third-stream composer one might think Gumpert has something of all. But no, that wouldn’t be a style. Like all jazz musicians of Rang, Gumpert plays with his biography. Resident in Berlin Mitte, the street is called „Am Zirkus“.
