Als Christopher Dell und John Tchicai sich vor sechs Jahren in Frankfurt zum ersten Mal trafen, ging es um ein musikalisches Projekt, das dem südafrikanischen Bassisten Johnny Dyani gewidmet ist. Kurz vor dessen Tod 1986 war in Zusammenarbeit mit Dyani noch der Konzertzyklus Jazz gegen Apartheid – die Musik Johnny Dyanis entstanden, dem Tchicai von Anfang an aktiv verbunden war. Eine intensive Zusammenarbeit Tchicais mit Chris McGregors BROTHERHOOD OF BREATH und Johnny Dyani gingen dem voraus. Als der Produzent Ulli Blobel von der Zusammenarbeit Tchicais und Dells bei Jazz gegen Apartheid erfuhr, regte er gemeinsame Konzerte an, die im Frühjahr 2010 in Berlin stattfanden. Vom Duo-Konzert am 27. März 2010 im damaligen jazzwerkstatt-Café schafften es einige Stücke auf diese CD, die anderen stammen von zeitnahen Aufnahmen des gemeinsamen Quartetts mit Christian Lillinger und Jonas Westergaard. Das Trio Dell, Westergaard, Lillinger ist aus der Zusammenarbeit mit Tchicai hervorgegangen. Die Idee des Kollektivs trägt bei allen vier Teilnehmern die vorliegenden Aufnahmen. Die Größe variiert zwischen Solo und Quartett, die Haltung des Kollektivs bleibt eindeutig: Position beziehen.

John Tchicai, the Afro-Danish saxophonist who was born in 1936, is one of the few remaing active players whose roots lie in the New Wave of Jazz in the sixties. He formed the NEW YORK ART QUARTET, and later the NEW YORK CONTEMPORARY FIVE with Archie Shepp and Don Cherry, and recorded with Coltrane, Ayler and many more. Tchicai met vibes player Christopher Dell in Berlin in 2010, as part of a memorial concert to Johnny Dyani with whom he had played in the BROTHERHOOD OF BREATH. Three tracks of the material presented on this album is from that duo concert. The other nine tracks were recorded three days later in a Berlin studio with a young rhythm section. The inter-generational project works supremely well, with genuine empathy between the musicians who emerge as a collective rather than Old Master and backing band. Tchicai’s playing is restrained and lyrical, the mood one of serenity and probing thoughtfulness.
