Lee Konitz ist der große Freund der Deutschen. Zunächst einmal wurde er verehrt, fast wie ein Heiliger. Nach dem Krieg war das – und ganz besonders in Frankfurt, wo er die Szene der ersten wichtigen Jazzstadt in Deutschland am nachhaltigsten beeinflusste. Weil er den letzten Stand der Jazzentwicklung, nämlich den Cool Jazz der Tristano-Schule auf der höchsten Stufe des Improvisationsingeniums vertrat? Oder weil der mystische, unverwechselbare Ton den Nerv deutscher Tiefensuche in der Musik traf? Alles Spekulationen.
Jedenfalls entwickelten sich Freundschaften, und eine besondere ist auf dieser CD dokumentiert. Seit 1986 ist Frank Wunsch der Partner von Lee Konitz auf den meisten seiner Europareisen. Wunsch hat bei Alfons Kontarsky Klavier und bei Rudolf Petzold Komposition studiert und besitzt die entsprechenden Kenntnisse in der zeitgenössischen E-Musik. Dazu hat er sich in die Jazztradition eingegraben – von den Standards bis zu lyrischem Free Jazz.
Konitz – das dringt nicht immer ins Bewusstsein der Jazzwelt vor – ist ein enorm vielseitiger Musiker. 1949 spielte er das erste ganz freie Stück Jazzgeschichte, das berühmte Intuition. Auch der Bebop hat deutliche Spuren bei Konitz hinterlassen. Evergreens swingt er lässig herunter, und in der atonalen Moderne ist ihm jede Herausforderung recht. Diese CD nun betont das avanciert Kammermusikalische, das er so intensiv lyrisch beherrscht – mit Wunschs Anregungen hier aber auslebt wie kaum jemals zuvor: feine Glasperlenspiele des Dialogs mit und ohne Bindungen an motivische Vorgaben, mit verschiedenen Tendenzen – mal zu den Abstraktionen der Neutöner und dann wieder zu lieblicher Poesie wie bei I Love You. Lee Konitz is the great friend of the Germans. At first he was honoured, almost like a saint. That was after the War – and especially in Frankfurt, where he had the most lasting influence on the scene in the first important jazz city in Germany. Because he represented the latest in jazz development, the Cool Jazz of the Tristano-school at the highest stage of improvisation genius? Or because his unmistakable, mystical tone hit the nerve of the German search for depth in
music? That’s all speculation.
In any case friendships developed and a special one is documented on this CD. Since 1986 Frank Wunsch has partnered Konitz on many of his European tours. Wunsch studied piano with Alfons Kontarsky and composition under Rudolf Petzold and has accordingly knowledge of contemporary serious music. He has also immersed himself in the tradition of jazz – from the standards through to lyrical free jazz.
Konitz – and this does not always penetrate the consciousness of the jazz world – is an enormously versatile musician. In 1949 he played the first entirely free piece in the history of jazz, the famous Intuition. Also Bebop clearly left its mark on Konitz. He casually swings down the evergreens and in the atonal modern music any challenge is just fine with him. Now this CD emphasizes the advanced chamber music style he commands so intensely lyrically – but with Wunsch’s ideas developed to the full here as never before: fine glass pearl playing in dialogues with and without links to theme lines, with various tendencies – sometimes towards the abstractions of the new sounds and then again towards poetic charm as in I love you.
