Als ich 2018 mit den Planungen für die Live-Aufnahme im Aachener Dumont begann, hatte ich nicht geahnt, dass es der Mitschnitt unseres vorletzten Konzerts werden würde – noch konnte ich mir die Unwägbarkeiten der Pandemie vorstellen, die dazu führten, dass wir diese Aufnahme erst im Herbst 2021 machten. Mit dem Dumont verbindet die Band eine lange Geschichte. Fast jede Tournee seit 2011 haben wir dort beendet, nicht selten in den frühen Morgenstunden. Die Größe des Clubs, der gute Flaschengeist des Hauses, Armin Burke, die wilde Stimmung und der Vibe waren perfekt für die Musik von Double Trouble.
Ein zweites Zuhause – für den Aachener Jung‘ Jonas sogar das erste. 2020 begann die Pandemie in Europa, und die Arbeit an dem Programm war lange beinahe unsere einzige musikalische Aktivität. Für Dumont Dancer hatte ich Musik geschrieben, die als Einzelstücke sowie als lange Form funktionieren, ich war daran interessiert, Gruppenimprovisationen und Übergänge kompositorisch so zu steuern, dass dem Publikum nicht ersichtlich wird, was geplant und was im Moment entsteht, gleichzeitig wollte ich – wie immer – maximale gestalterische Freiheit für meine Musiker. In den kurzen Fenstern der Freiheit haben wir geprobt- einmal sogar in Aachen, wo uns Armin sein Dumont für mehrere Tage aufschloss. Das Gefühl, endlich wieder gemeinsam Musik zu machen, war unbeschreiblich schön. Die Aufnahme dokumentiert auch das erste Konzert im Dumont, ohne Auflagen mit vollem Haus. Ich freue mich über die Energie, die positive Stimmung der Musik und der Menschen in diesem tollen Raum. Ich empfinde das Album als mein optimistisches Statement für die Zukunft unserer Live-Musik.
Anfang 2022 haben wir für unser Label jazzwerkstatt noch ein weiteres sehr schönes Konzert im Berliner Institut Français gespielt. Kurz darauf erzählte mir Robert, dass er nach neuen musikalischen Abenteuern sucht. Dass wir eine richtige Band waren, war immer unsere große Stärke (Andreas hat übrigens immer behauptet, ich wäre der Ringo Starr von Double Trouble…). Schnell war uns klar, dass wir keinen von uns musikalisch ersetzen könnten. Das Spielen mit Jonas und Robert begann 2003 in der Band des belgischen Gitarristen Frederik Leroux. Mit Andreas verbindet mich seit meiner Rückkehr nach Berlin in 2007 eine tiefe musikalische Freundschaft.
Seit wir 2011 unsere erste CD Double Trouble veröffentlicht haben, hat sich mein Spiel, meine ‚musicianship‘, mein Blick auf Improvisation im Jazzkontext durch die Tourneen mit diesen fantastischen Musikern fundamental verändert. Dafür bin ich dankbar. Manchmal träume ich noch von unseren Konzerten. Ich bin dann wehmütig, dass sich diese Tür geschlossen hat und gleichzeitig gespannt auf die Türen, die sich öffnen werden. When I first started planning a live recording in Aachen’s Dumont in 2018, I never imagined that we would be recording the penultimate concert of our band. Likewise I could not have anticipated the unthinkable nature of the pandemic, which meant we did not record until fall 2021. We have a long history with the venue, the Dumont. Ever since 2011 we have finished nearly every tour in Armin’s Club (more often than not in the wee hours of the morning). The size of the club, the ‚genie in a bottle‘ Armin and the wild yet cosy vibe have always made it the perfect venue for our music. Indeed it’s a second home for Jonas – he’s Aachen’s finest, after all.
When the pandemic first started in 2020 working on the music for the concert was our sole musical activity. For Dumont Dancer I wrote music which works as single pieces as well as a long form. In terms of the composition I was interested in steering group improvisation and transitions, blurring the line for the listener between what is planned and what is created in the moment. Crucially, I wanted the musicians to have a maximum amount of creative freedom within the music. We rehearsed in the short windows of freedom we had during the pandemic. Once, Armin even unlocked the doors of Dumont for us for a few days and that feeling of making music together at last was beautiful beyond words. This recording documents the first concert at the Dumont without regulations and with a sold-out house. I am so happy about the energy: the positive atmosphere both in the music and of the audience at this great venue. For me this album is an optimistic statement for the future of our live music.
In January 2022 we played one more beautiful concert for our Label jazzwerkstatt at the Institut Français in Berlin. Shortly after Robert told me that it was time for him to look for new musical adventures. We were always a proper band, and it was clear that replacing one of us was not an option (by the way, Andreas always said that I was the Ringo Starr of Double Trouble…). I first played with Robert and Jonas in 2003, in the band of Belgian guitar-player Frederik Leroux. Andreas and I have been close friends ever since I moved back to Berlin in 2007. Since we released our debut Double Trouble in 2011 we have been on tour every year. Playing with these fantastic musicians has fundamentally changed my playing, my musicianship and my view on improvisation in the jazz context. For that I am forever grateful. Sometimes I dream of our concerts and when I wake up I feel sad that this door has closed, yet at the same time I am excited about the doors that are now opening into other musical worlds.
