Einfach nur drei Individuen, einfach ein Trio, Just Another Jazz Band, das trotzdem stetig überrascht. Songhafte Eigenkompositionen sind die gemeinsame Basis aus der ihr Fabrikat hervorgeht und trotzdem klingt dieses Trio nicht einfach nach Schlagzeug, Kontrabass und Saxophon. Sie sind gewillt ihr elegantes Konstrukt jederzeit wieder niederzureißen und abrupt mit einer trashigen Manier gespeist aus Hip-Hop, Pop, Free-Jazz oder Krautrock zu kombinieren. Es werden Momente geschaffen, in denen die typischen Regeln der Instrumente kaum gelten. Diese Regeln werden durch vertauschte Rollen und erweiterte Spieltechniken umgangen und ausgehebelt. All das schafft eine authentische Aussage, die über Just Another Foundrys Musik hinausgeht. Musik der Großstadt und dennoch der eigenen Wurzeln. Musik, die das Feuer einer neuen Generation widerspiegelt.

Dieses Understatement wirkt in Bezug auf dieses Trio, das sich in kürzester Zeit schon eine beachtliche Reputation erspielt und diverse Preise gewonnen hat, fast schon ein wenig frech. Aber das ist auch gut so, denn was JAF von anderen Formationen ihrer Generation abhebt, ist gerade der Mut zur Kompromisslosigkeit und die Weigerung, sich aktuellen Trends und Moden unterzuordnen. Die Besinnung auf das Wesentliche, die Kommunikation, den Klang ihrer drei Instrumente und die Konfrontation von Klängen im Moment, liegen dieser Musik zugrunde. Man kann jeden Moment dieser Aufnahme unter Lupe betrachten und wird immer etwas Spannendes finden: ein Kratzen, ein Schnarren, ein Säuseln oder eine kleine Melodie. Das J, das A und das F – Jonas, Anthony und Florian – haben ihre gemeinsame Stimme gefunden und lassen sie erklingen. Just three individuals, just a trio, just another jazz band which surprises constantly. Their songlike originals provide the fundamentals from which they create. But this trio does not simply sound like drums, double bass and saxophone. They’re willed to demolish their elegant construct at any time and rebuild it abruptly in a manner which is fed by Hip-Hop, Pop, Free Jazz and Krautrock. There are moments in which the typical rules of the instruments hardly apply or get altered heavily by swapping roles and using extended playing techniques. All this creates an authentic statement that goes beyond Just Another Foundry’s music. This is the music of the big cities and yet of their roots: a music that mirrors the fire of a new generation.

When you look at this group, who have earned a considerable reputation and won several prices in such a short time, the understatement seems bold. This however, is a good thing, because what separates JAF from other ensembles of their generation is their courage to make no compromises and refusal to bow to current trends and fads. Consideration of simplicity, communication, the sound of their three instruments and confrontation of those sounds in the moment underlie this music. One can look at any moment of this recording under the microscope and find something exciting every time: a scratch, a snarl, a murmur, a small melody.
