Das Duo als Gesamtkunstwerk, das von Bewegung, Rhythmik und Leichtigkeit geprägt war – höchst poetisch, mit architektonischen und choreographischen Komponenten, ein konzentriertes Kunstwerk, das die Bühne abheben lässt! Die Zusammenarbeit von Lacy und Waldron begann Mitte der 50er Jahre mit «Reflections» (Prestige) – Themen von Monk, auf dessen Grundlage die Bande zwischen dem Sopranisten und dem Pianisten immer enger wurden.
Die beiden 1984 in Ost-Berlin auf der Bühne zu sehen, das ist, als ob man mit ihnen ein vertrautes Nachschlagewerk, über dem sie immer wieder gebrütet und das sie ständig ausgefeilt haben, öffnen und darin blättern würde. Man hört, wie die Füße den Takt vorgeben und die Stimme die Finger begleitet und folgt den Bewegungen des doppelköpfigen Organismus, den sie darstellen; man wird eins mit diesem freien Sinnesfluß, der vom ersten Moment des Konzerts an überspringt. Hier entfaltet sich Harmonie in Perfektion. Die einleitende Improvisation scheint nach und nach Erinnerungen hervorzurufen, denen die Kompositionen von Lacy, Strayhorn und Waldron Leben verleihen werden. Und dann «Epistrophy», das eigentliche monksche „Masterpiece“. Es beendet den betörenden Reiseweg, dessen Strecke sich erst in seinem Verlauf herauskristallisierte, in seinem gemächlichen Dahindriften und seinen Verknüpfungen, in seinen Ausreißern, Kniffen und Verschlingungen.
Magie, Hypnose, Umherirren zwischen Geradlinigkeiten und Verstrickungen der Noten, die am Ende ihrer selbst entflammen: Lacy und Waldron heben ab, und wir mit ihnen: der Himmel über Berlin. Guillaume Tarche

The duo as a total work of art, characterised by movement, rhythm and lightness – highly poetic, with architectural and choreographic components, a concentrated work of art that makes the stage stand out! The collaboration of Lacy and Waldron began in the mid-50s with « Reflections » (Prestige) – themes by Monk, on the basis of which the ties between the soprano and the pianist became ever tighter. Seeing the two on stage in East Berlin in 1984, this is as if one would open and flip into a familiar reference work with them over and over again and again and that they have constantly filed out. You hear the feet pretend the beat and the voice accompanies the fingers and follow the movements of the double-headed organism they represent; one becomes one with this free flow of senses that skips from the first moment of the concert. Here harmony unfolds into perfection. The introductory improvisation seems to evoke memories to which the compositions of Lacy, Strayhorn and Waldron will give life. And then „Epistrophy“, the actual Monksche „Masterpiece“. It ends the beguiling journey whose route only crystallized out in its course, in its leisurely dahindrifts and its connections, in its outliers, tricks and devours.
